Shelley Gautier

Twelve-time world champion Shelley Gautier’s international success received a major recognition in 2015 as she was nominated for the prestigious Laureus Award for the World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability. She was the only Canadian nominated across the six Laureus categories.

In November 2014 and 2015, Gautier was named Female Cyclist of the Year by the Ontario Cycling Association. In 2015 Gautier was a torch bearer for the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games and was a silver medalist at the mixed time trial event. She also founded the Shelley Gautier Para-Sport Foundation to bring parasport to the disabled community.

Her dominance in the T1 class in road para-cycling continued in 2015 at the UCI World Championships in Switzerland. She won both the road race and individual time trial and is now on a streak of 12 consecutive gold medals at the worlds, spanning from 2009 to 2015.

In 2015 Gautier was honoured with The Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Alumni Association Above & Beyond Award by the University of Toronto. Gautier was also inducted into the Inaugural Toronto Sports Hall of Honour and awarded the Sports Niagara Para-Athlete of the Year in Para-Cycling.

In 2001, Gautier was in a mountain biking accident and suffered a severe head injury leaving her in a coma for six weeks. She now leads an independent life as a hemiplegic (with paralysis on one side of the body).

Before her accident Gautier was a practicing physiotherapist and knows the importance of keeping physically active. She has applied this knowledge and experience throughout her own recovery. Within a year she was back on a bike again and by 2007 she was racing 50 kilometres.

Gautier was the first female tricycle T1 rider on the international scene in early 2009. A silver medallist at the Guadalajara 2011 Parapan American Games and a London 2012 Paralympian, she is training full-time for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
