Paul Tingley

Paul Tingley

Paul Tingley will be competing in Rio at his fifth Paralympic Games, after winning a gold medal in the 2.4m event at the 2008 Games in Beijing and a bronze in the Sonar class at Sydney in 2000. He was fifth in the 2.4mR Class at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Tingley grew up in a sports-obsessed family, started sailing at age 10, and racing at 25. In 1994, a skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. In 1998, a friend suggested he move to Victoria to sail with the disabled team and try out for the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games. Tingley went on to compete in both the 2000 and 2004 Paralympic Games in the Sonar, a three-person keelboat.

Tingley returned to Halifax in 2005 and began racing the one-person boat, 2.4 mR, which he sailed in the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games. Tingley is considered one of the top solo competitors in the world, even among able-bodied sailors. For Rio 2016, he will return to competing in the Sonar class with teammates Scott Lutes and Logan Campbell.

Tingley’s career highlight is his gold medal finish at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. He also recorded a bronze medal finish at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.

Tingley dedicates the majority of his time to sailing, but when he is not on the water, he is typically spending his time with family and friends.
