The Rio 2016 Organizing Committee of the Paralympic Games has released the Classification guide, the overall rules governing classification at the Games.

The International Paralympic Committee “zero classification” policy is in effect for the Games, limiting classification to wheelchair rugby. Athletes for all other sports must seek exception from the IPC through their NPC.

The Canadian Paralympic Committee plans to have zero classification of Team Canada at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and will be supporting NSOs to achieve this target through the Classification Support Program, which has already successfully supported five NSOs in their athlete classification goals.
