Brian McKeever

Canada’s big star from the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver/Whistler began a successful defence of his three Games titles.  Brian McKeever of Canmore, Alta., earned a decisive victory in the men’s 20 kilometre para-nordic cross country ski race for the visually impaired with guides Graham Nishikawa and Erik Carleton.   It was Canada’s first gold medal of the Sochi Games.

McKeever had caught a virus a week prior to the Games and wasn’t sure how it would affect his performance. "It was a tough day today," said McKeever at the finish line to CTV news. "In an endurance sport, you knock yourself down a few per cent and that can mean the difference between winning and losing."

For  the first time in his career, McKeever switched guides during the race.  Carleton was also battling a virus.  After day four Canada’s medal count stood at a gold, two silver and three bronze.
