Minister of State (Sport) to join three-time Paralympian at school

BRAMPTON, May 6, 2015 – Stephanie Dixon, a three-time Paralympic swimmer and the Assistant Chef de Mission for the Canadian Parapan Am Team, will make a special presentation to students at Brampton’s Fairlawn Public School on Friday May 8 as part of Paralympic Schools Week 2015.

Dixon will share the story of her journey in sport, as well as look ahead to the upcoming 2015 Parapan American Games, to be held Aug. 7 to 15 in Toronto. The Hon. Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) will join Dixon at the school and reflect on the Year of Sport in Canada and importance of sport to Canadians.

Dixon competed at the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and won a total of seven gold, 10 silver and two bronze medals. She still holds the world record in the 100-metre backstroke in her class (S9). At the 2007 Parapan American Games, she won six gold and one silver.

The Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games will feature 1,608 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. Team Canada is expected to send a team of approximately 220 athletes and has set a goal of finishing in the top three nations in the total medal count.
