OTTAWA, October 20, 2015 – Following the federal election last night, the Canadian Paralympic Committee would like to congratulate Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party for leading a successful campaign.

“Congratulations to Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party on their win in a very exciting election,” said Gaétan Tardif, President of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. “We have strong confidence in the Liberals, who have shown a longstanding interest in investing in sport and health. We are looking forward to working with the new Minister of Heritage and Minister of Sport, in continuing to grow opportunities for Canadians of all abilities to take part in sport.”

Carla Qualtrough

“I would also like to congratulate Paralympic swimmer and human rights lawyer Carla Qualtrough, who won in the riding of Delta, B.C. I know Carla’s diverse experience and dedication to excellence will serve her well in this new role.”

Qualtrough is the first Paralympian to be elected federally in Canada. As a swimmer with a visual impairment, she represented Canada at the Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992 Paralympic Games, winning three medals.

Coming off the successful Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games – where Canada placed second in the total medal count – the Canadian Paralympic Committee is looking forward with great anticipation to the upcoming Paralympic Summer Games in Rio in 2016, the Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang in 2018, and beyond.
