CALGARY, Alta. – The best sledge hockey players from across the country will converge on Calgary this weekend for Canada’s National Sledge Team training camp, which runs from March 1-7 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park.
The 20 players attending camp include two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 11 forwards; 16 players coming to Calgary helped Canada win a bronze medal at the 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge earlier this month in Leduc, Alta.

In addition, Hockey Canada has announced that Kevin Figsby (Montreal, Que.) has been added to the coaching staff of Canada’s National Sledge Team for the remainder of the season. Figsby has been head coach of the men’s hockey team at Concordia University since 2000, and led Quebec to a bronze medal at the 1995 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
From training camp, the Team Canada roster will be trimmed down by head coach Ken Babey, assistant coaches Figsby and Hervé Lord, general manager Andy Van Neutegem and Hockey Canada’s high performance department, and the selected players will represent Canada in a three-game series against the United States, March 26-28 in Charlotte, N.C.
The series against the Americans will be Canada’s final competition for the 2015 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, which is scheduled for April 24-May 2 in Buffalo, N.Y.
“There are a number of things we can build on as a team coming out of Leduc, and we’re excited to take another big step towards Buffalo and the world championship,” said Shawn Bullock, senior manager of hockey operations and men’s national teams with Hockey Canada. “This camp is another tremendous opportunity to have our players together and on the ice, and we’re looking forward to a great week in Calgary.”
The players will be on the ice for five days in Calgary, with daily practices scheduled. The camp also includes a number of off-ice presentations, focused on physical performance, mental performance and fitness.
