Catherine aNN Mitchell

Two years ago, Catherine Mitchell quit swimming after she had reached a major goal by competing at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and wanted to focus on finishing a bachelor’s degree. But after eight months, she realized she missed the sport and felt she still had the talent to race with the best in the world.

She achieved a major goal this year qualifying for the Parapan American Games. She met the qualifying standards in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke at the Can Am Championships.

Mitchell started swimming at age 13 after attempting other sports and then following the recommendation of a friend at school. She immediately enjoyed training and quickly joined the competitive team. Soon she was dreaming of racing for Canada at the Paralympic Games.

A visually impaired swimmer, Mitchell races in the S12 category and is in her last year in history and sociology at the University of Winnipeg. She stays involved in her community by volunteering with the CNIB, the Disability Resource Centre at the University of Winnipeg and other groups which help people with disabilities. She plans to pursue a career in social work.
