Adam Lancia

Adam Lancia

Adam Lancia began shooting hoops in 1989 after discovering wheelchair basketball at Variety Village, a local community centre in his hometown of Toronto, Ont. He grew up playing with the Variety Village club and ultimately made his way to the Canadian national team.

Lancia’s success as an athlete stems from his fellow players and coaches who challenge and push him to be at his best. Of course, having the right attitude doesn't hurt. If you ask him, he will tell you that being born with a disability was a blessing, because it has allowed him to meet so many wonderful people in the wheelchair basketball community and travel the globe to compete.

Lancia made his Team Canada debut in 1997 at the first-ever Junior Men’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in front of a hometown crowd in Toronto, Ont. Lancia and his teammates won the gold medal and successfully defended their title at the next edition of the tournament in 2001.

He joined the Sr. Men’s National Team in May 2001, and would eventually help Canada claim gold at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens and 2012 Paralympics in London, as well as silver at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008.

Lancia is also a mainstay with the Ontario provincial wheelchair basketball team. He played a vital role on the club that won five consecutive National Championships from 2002-2006 and he recently captured back-to-back tournament most valuable player honours in 2010 and 2011.

During the Team Canada offseason, Lancia made a name for himself playing professionally in Europe.
