Abdi Fatah Dini

Abdi Fatah Dini

Originally from Somalia, Abdi Fatah Dini is truly an outstanding athlete whose qualities of fair play and dedication to sport excellence are exemplified in everything he does.

He is an individual who quietly goes about his business on and off the court, ever cognizant of his surroundings, and above all else dedicated to making himself and those around him better. His personal motto of “do the best you can” seems to hold no limits for this student of life who often seems to say so much using so few words. Dini demonstrates on a daily basis that being a leader or an effective role model is not always about being vocal. Rather, he embodies the concept of actions speak louder than words.

Throughout his career in wheelchair basketball, which began in 1996, Dini has been a rock-steady example of the honest and consistent work ethic needed to excel at the most elite level. His ability to inspire holds true as much in international competition as a member of Team Canada as it does while he competes at Variety Village, the local specialized sports facility in his hometown of Scarborough, Ont.

He won a gold medal with Team Canada at the inaugural world junior championship in 1997 and repeated the feat in 2001. He also won gold at the Canada Games in 1999 and took home the bronze in 2003 as part of Team Ontario.

Since joining the Senior Men's National Team in 2006, he has demonstrated poise in pressure situations and developed into one of Canada's most consistent performers. Dini won a silver medal at his first Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008. In 2012, he won Paralympic gold at the Games in London.
